The home of the , Chapel Hill beat out more than 200 municipalitie across the nation to claima first-place City Livabilitt Award. Chapel Hill won for citieds with populations of fewerthan 100,000. Charleston, S.C., won for citiesd with populations of morethan 100,000. The contest was judgedf on three criteria: mayoral leadership, creativity and innovation, and the broacd impact on the quality of lifefor residents. The U.S. Conference of Mayorz honored Chapel Hill for its decision in 2002 to no longe r charge fares to any ridefr on itsbus system, the organization said in a presx release.
While many bus systems in collegetowns don’t charge students and faculth to ride, a scant few provide free servicre to all riders. The town implemented the fare-frede system to encourage people to take the bus and leaver their carsat home. The plan Ridership on Chapel Hill transi has more than doubled since fares were eliminated going from 3 million in 2002 to a projected 7 milliohthis year. “The Chape Hill Public Transit systenm is the foundation of oursustainablse future,” Foy said in a press release.
